The Workshop on Protection of Geographical Indications and Traditional Specialty Guaranteed Products was organized in with our Institute and the TAIEX Office on December 06, 2007 in TPI’s conference hall.
TAIEX, also known as Technical Support and Information Exchange Office, is administered by the EU Commission’s D Enlargement and it is a technical assistance mechanism that helps new Member States, candidate countries and potential candidate countries in transfer of EU legislation, implementation, and enforcement. Turkey became a beneficiary of the TAIEX funds on March 15, 2002. However, the Workshop on Protection of Geographical Indications and Traditional Specialty Guaranteed Products is the first event that TPI actually requested though the Institute had taken part in various other TAIEX activities before.
The opening remarks of the workshop were made by the TPI’s Acting President Dr. Yüksel BİRİNCİ. During the workshop, guest speakers from National Origin and Quality Institute (France), Ministry of Agriculture (Portugal), European Network for Accreditation (Spain), and Ministry of Agriculture (Ireland) made presentations. The speakers and the topic of their presentations are as follows:
• “Presentation of the national system and legislation regarding regional product in Turkey.” Ms. Gonca Ilicali, Trademark Examiner, Turkish Patent Institute
• “EU regulations concerning Protection of Geographical Indications (PGI) and Protection of Designations of Origin (PDO) for agricultural products and foodstuffs and practical aspects for a third country.”
• “EU Regime for TGSs and practical aspects for a third country.”

• International protection of the geographical indications. (Lisbon Agreement and Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights agreement (TRIPS)) Ms Marian Byrne, Ministry of Agriculture, Ireland
